The design of this multipurpose space posed the challenge of allowing the client to remain outdoors, yet protected from wind, rain, and solar radiation.
In addition to being in harmony with the existing structure, the connection to the garden and views were crucial.
The solution uses the extension of the retaining wall to define the space. Wood-clad steel beams supporting printed glass panels rise from the garden behind the retaining wall, suggesting treetops. This glass roof provides shade and further defines the space.
The geometry of the existing house is reinforced by a multipurpose central unit that allows the space to serve as a dining room, kitchen, bar, or formal gathering space.
